Materials Needed

  • Cactus Chipboard Shape (from Hobby Lobby)
  • Scrap of Wood
  • Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Scrapbook Paper (also from Hobby Lobby)
  • Mod Podge or A Glue Stick
  • Fringe Trim
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Paint the edges of the cactus shape to match your scrapbook paper.

Step 2: Trace around the cactus onto the back of the scrapbook paper and cut along the pencil line.

Step 3: Cover the chipboard with glue and attach the paper. It will hang over the edges slightly.

Step 4: Using sandpaper, sand around the edges, moving from front to back. This will remove any parts of the paper that are hanging over the chipboard.

This is by far the best way I’ve found to attach paper to a shape and have it fit perfectly. Sanding the edges almost fuses the paper to the chipboard and gives a super nice finish. Check it out in this next pic:

Step 5: Add trim around the top of the cactus “pot” if desired. It’s not necessary by any means, but it does add some dimension.

Step 6: Drill holes into the cactus shape where you’d like to hang your earrings. I drilled right through the paper and just went slowly to avoid tearing.

Step 7: To make the base that will allow the cactus to stand upright, cut a groove into a piece of scrap wood that’s the same thickness as the cactus. I had my husband do this part. He just lowered the blade on his table saw and cut lines through the center of the wood until the groove was the right thickness. If you don’t have a table saw, you could chisel out a groove or glue two smaller pieces of wood to either side of the cactus to make it stand upright. Paint or stain if desired.

After the base piece is dry, slide the cactus into place and you’ve got yourself a darling earring holder! My daughter is already begging me to put this in her bedroom. It’s such a funky, whimsical jewelry display. My color loving heart is in heaven!
