Crochet Rectangle Bag

Materials:

  • 100% cotton (size 4) yarn, I used Yarn Bee Fundamental Cotton (100% mercerized cotton) in Green. 2 skeins needed, about 7 oz. or 320 yards.
  • Size H, 5.00 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

st(s)- stitch(es)

hk- hook

ch- chain

hdc- half double crochet

flo- front loop only

blo- back loop only

Gauge:

17 sts X 8 rows = 4″

Final Measurement:

15″ wide X 16″ tall (at tallest height, 7″ from the middle), 7″ strap drop

Pattern:

Ch 44

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from the hk and each st across, turn (42).

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in the blo in each st across, turn (42).

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in the flo in each st across, turn (42).

Continue to work rows 2 and 3 until your piece has a total of 66 rows.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Your rectangle will measure approx. 31″ wide X 11″ tall.

Construction:

With the wrong side facing you fold one corner down to form a triangle and fold the other corner up to form a triangle on the other side.

The triangle will be 22 rows across, the middle part 22 rows across and the last triangle 22 rows across.

Cut a long piece of yarn and with your tapestry needle, whip stitch up the side of the bag to join the sides, starting in the corner. Fasten off on the inside and weave in ends.

Repeat on other side.

Strap:

Ch 70

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from the hk and each st across, turn (69).

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sl st in the top loop of each st across, turn (69).

Fasten off on last row, weave in ends.

Cut a long piece of yarn. With tapestry needle sew the strap on the inside of the top corner of the bag.

Repeat on other side.

Fasten off, weave in all ends.
