Materials:
300 yds. lightweight mercerized cotton, or other sport-wt. cotton with high twist and "stringlike" character - OR - light sport-wt. yarn of choice (sample shown in Patons "Grace")
Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge
Tapestry needle
Gauge: 12 treble crochet = 4", 4 rows treble crochet = 3-1/2" on size H/8 (5 mm) hook
Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), increase (inc), repeat (rep), single crochet (sc), stitch (st), treble crochet (trc), treble crochet 3 (or 2) together (trc3tog, trc2tog)
Pattern notes: Scarf/shawlette is worked sideways, from end point to end point.
Special stitches:
To work treble crochet: yarn over hook twice before inserting into stitch, then work off 2 loops at a time.
To increase: Work 2 trc in same st, as instructed.
To decrease: Work trc3tog (trc2tog) as follows: leaving last 2 loops of ea trc on hook, work trc in ea of next 3 (or 2) sts, then draw yarn through all loops on hook in one motion to complete decrease.
Scarf/Shawlette
Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across (7 sc)
Row 2 (begin increases): Ch 4 (counts as first trc), turn, trc in ea sc across to last sc, 2 trc in last sc (inc made) (8 trc)
Row 3: Ch 4, turn, trc in same st (inc made), trc in ea trc across, trc in top of turning ch (9 trc)
Row 4: Ch 4, turn, trc across to last trc, 2 trc in top of turning ch (inc made) (10 trc)
Row 5: Ch 4, turn, trc in same st (inc made), trc in ea trc across, trc in top of turning ch (11 trc)
Rows 6-16: Rep last two rows, keeping all increases at same edge (this will form lower edge and point of scarf)
Rows 17-29: Continue in pattern as established, but work 3 trc in same stitch (instead of 2 trc) when increasing at end (or beginning) of row. At end of Row 29, there should be 48 trc.
NOTE: Row 29 marks the center point of scarf as shown in photo (1/2 of the yarn called for in pattern was used up at this point.) If you have extra yarn and want a longer shawl, continue increases until 1/2 of the total amount of yarn has been used, then begin decreases as follows:
Row 30 (begin decreases): Ch 4, turn, trc3tog (dec made), trc in ea trc across, trc in top of turning ch (46 trc)
Row 31: Ch 4, turn, trc in ea trc across to last 4 sts, trc3tog (dec made), trc in top of turning ch (44 trc)
Row 32: Ch 4, turn, trc3tog (dec made), trc in ea trc across, trc in top of turning ch (42 trc)
Rows 33-42: Continue in pattern, working trc3tog decreases as established.
Rows 43-57: Continue in pattern but substitute trc2tog decreases instead of trc3tog. At end of Row 57 there should be 7 or 8 trc (if necessary, decrease on next row by sc2tog, to end with 7 sts).
Row 58: Ch 1, turn, sc in ea trc across (7 sc). Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing:
Consult care instructions on yarn ball band and if appropriate, damp-block scarf/shawlette by stretching it out flat on thick towels. Cover with damp towel and leave to dry in a place with good air circulation.
