Special Stitch

Sc2tog = *Yo, insert hook in next dc, Yo and pull up a loop * twice, Yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook (1 stitch decrease).

BERET

Ch 5; join with slip st to form a ring.

Round 1 (Right side): Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, (3 dc in ring, ch 1) 4 times, join with slip st to first dc: 15 dc and 5 ch-1 spaces.

Round 2: Slip st in next dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, skip next dc, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, *skip next dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with slip st to first dc: 30 dc and 10 ch-1 spaces.

Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) twice in next ch-1 space, *(3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space, (3 dc, ch 1) twice in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around, join with slip st to first dc: 45 dc and 15 ch-1 spaces.

Round 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 space around to last ch-1 space, skip last ch-1 space, join with slip st to first dc.

Round 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space, (3 dc, ch 1) twice in next ch-1 space, ** (3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around, ending last rep at **, skip last ch-1 space, join with slip st to first dc: 60 dc and 20 ch-1 spaces.

Round 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) twice in next ch-1 space, *(3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space, (3 dc, ch 1) twice in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around to lastch-1 space, skip last ch-1 space, join with slip st to first dc: 90 dc and 30 ch-1 spaces.

Rounds 7-11: Repeat Round 4.

Round 12: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, skip next ch-1 space, *dc in next 3 dc, skip next ch-1 space; repeat from * around: 90 dc.

Round 13: Ch 1, sc in same space and in next 6 dc, work Sc2tog, *sc in next 7 dc, work Sc2tog; repeat * around, join with slip st to first sc: 80 sts.

Rounds 14-21: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with slip st to first sc, at the end of Round 21, fasten off.

OPTIONAL FINISHING

Cut ½” (1.25 cm) elastic to length of Beret circumference, allowing a ½” (1.25 cm) for sewing. Overlap ends of elastic and sew together with sewing needle and matching thread. Loop elastic around the wrong side of Beret between Round 14 and Round 21. Fold up Round 21 to Round 13, so the wrong sides are together. Thread yarn needle with a length of yarn and sew Round 21 and Round 13 together, securing the elastic inside.
