EDC – extended double crochet

The extended double crochet stitch is a taller variation of standard double crochet.

  1. Yarn over. Insert the hook into the specified stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
  2. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the first loop on the hook. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. There are now 2 loops on the hook.
  4. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.

Standing HDC

  1. Make a slip knot.
  2. YO, holding loop on hook, insert hook in specified stitch (space).
  3. YO and pull up a loop (you have 3 loops on hook).
  4. YO and draw through 3 loops on hook.

Instructions:

To make this crochet frog square, we will need to crochet a square with a frog shape in the middle, two eyes, two legs, and then sew these elements onto the square. We will also need to embroider the mouth.

Square

With Color A medium weight yarn #4 and crochet hook H/8 – 5 mm, make magic ring;

Rnd 1. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), make all of the next stitches into the ring – 2 DC, 9 HDC, 3 DC; join with Sl St to top of Ch 3 at the beginning of the round. Total – 15 Sts.

Rnd 2. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a St), DC in same St, 2 DC in next St, 3 DC in next St, DC in next 2 Sts, [2 DC in next, DC in next] 3 times, DC in next, 3 DC in next St, 2 DC in next 2 Sts, join with Sl St to top of first DC. Total – 25 Sts.

Rnd 3. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a St), SC in same St and in next, (2 DC, 2 EDC, 2 DC) in next St, SC in next 2, [2 SC in next, SC in next] 9 times, (2 DC, 2 EDC, 2 DC) in next St, SC in next, join with Sl St to first SC. Fasten off Color A. Total – 44 Sts.

Rnd 4. Join Color B with standing HDC in first SC of previous round, Ch 2, skip 2 Sts, Sl St in next, [Ch 2, skip 1 St, Sl St in next] 2 times, [Ch 3, skip 2 Sts, Sl St in next] 10 times, [Ch 2, skip 1 St, Sl St in next] 2 times, Ch 1, join with Sl St to first HDC. Total – 16 spaces.

Rnd 5. Sl St in first Ch -2 space to bring yarn to the center of the arch,Ch 1,SC in same space, [Ch 3, SC in next space] 5 times, Ch 4, SC in next space, [Ch 3, SC in next space] 3 times, Ch 4, SC in next space, [Ch 3, SC in next space] 5 times, Ch 3, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 16 spaces.

Rnd 6. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a St), 3 SC in first space, [(2 DC, Ch 3, 2 DC) in next space, 3 SC in each of next 3 spaces] 3 times, (2 DC, Ch 3, 2 DC) in next space, 3 SC in each of next 2 spaces, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 52 Sts and 4 Ch-3 spaces.

Rnd 7. With Color A medium weight yarn #4 and crochet hook H/8 – 5 mm, Ch 6;
Rnd 1. Work under 2 loops: 2 HDC in 3rd Ch, HDC in next two Chs, SC in last Ch; [Ch 3, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook and in next Ch] 3 times,

continue working on opposite side of the beginning Chain – SC in next Ch, HDC in each of next 2, 3 HDC in last, join with Sl St in top of first HDC. Fasten off.

Eyes

White Part – make 2

With Color C medium weight yarn #4 and crochet hook H/8 – 5 mm, make magic ring;

Rnd 1. Ch 2, 9 HDC in ring, join with Sl St in top of first HDC. Fasten off.

Black Pupil – make 2

With black crochet thread size 3 and crochet hook size C/2.75 mm, make magic ring;

Rnd 1. Ch 2, 9 HDC in ring, join with Sl St in top of first HDC. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew the eyes and legs onto the square.

Using black light weight #3 yarn, embroider the mouth.

Block the square.
