SUPPLY TO MAKE COLOR BLOCK COASTER FROM SQUARE FABRIC
Use multiple plain color fabrics or colorful printed fabrics for this project. Mix and match the color or prints to create the color block.
Use charm pack size fabric, which is 5″ square or larger square fabrics. The coaster size is easily customizable.
You can use fusible fleece or quilt batting for the layer. Another option is using felt.
- 2 pieces of 5″ square cotton quilt fabrics, scraps or charm pack size
- 1 piece of 5″ square fusible fleece or batting
- Disappeared ink fabric marker. I like this dual-purpose fabric marker
- Pins or quilting clips
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Thread
- Chopstick
- Sewing Machine
- Ironing machine
Draw a diagonal line on both fabrics.
Or draw a straight line in the middle of both fabrics.
Cut the fabric along the marked line. Put together two different fabric prints with the right side of the fabric facing each other.
Sew the fabric together on the long edge of the triangle fabric.
Sew the fabric together on one of the long edges of the rectangle fabric.
Open the seam, then press it with the ironing machine.
Put together one of the fabrics with the fusible fleece, pin it or use quilting clips.
Topstitch 0.25″ left and right from the diagonal seam.
Topstitch 0.25″ left and right from the middle seam.
Pin together with the other fabric piece, with the right side of both fabrics facing each other.
Sew along the edge of the fabric with a 0.25″ seam allowance.
Skip 2″ for the opening gap.
Trim the extra fusible fleece or batting, then clip all four corners.
Turn the fabric right side out.
Push each corner with a chopstick.
Fold the opening gap inward, then press the coaster with an ironing machine.
Topstitch along the edge and close the opening at the same time.
The color block fabric coaster is ready to use now.

The fabric on these rectangle patchwork coasters was from the fabric I used for making the DIY cell phone bag and leftover fabric from the charm pack bundle for the fabric cord holders.
You can still use this tutorial to make a larger coaster or make it into a rectangle size with multiple patchworks.
