Required Supplies:

  • RED HEART Reflective: 2 (2) balls 8251 Neon Orange
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hooks: 5mm [US H-8] and 5.5mm [US I-9]
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle

Child’s size: two 5/8” (15.9 mm) buttons

Adult’s size: two 1” (25 mm) buttons

GAUGE: With 5.5mm [US I-9] hook, 12 dc = 4” (10 cm); 9 rounds in pattern = 4” (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Directions are for size Child. Changes for size Adult are in parentheses.

Child’s size measures 6” (15 cm) around x 7½” (19 cm) long.

Adult’s size measures 9” (23 cm) around x 12” (30.5 cm) long

Special Stitches


dc/sctog = double crochet/single crochet decrease. Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.

dc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

Fpdtr = front-post double treble crochet. Yarn over 3 times, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post of indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times.

sc/dctog = single crochet/double crochet decrease. Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.

Special Technique


join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Notes


1. Cuff is crocheted back and forth in rows. The short ends are joined together with a row of slip stitches, forming a ring.

2. Hand, Finger Cover, and Thumb are worked in joined rounds. Palm side of Hand has a buttoned opening.

3. When instructed to work around a stitch “2 rows below”, work in the indicated stitch in the row numbered 2 less than the row being worked. For example, if you are working Row 5, a stitch “2 rows below” would be in (5 – 2) = Row 3. Skip the corresponding stitch in the row into which you would usually work.

4. When working over Fpdtr just made, insert hook around only the indicated stitch and under the stitch previously made; do not catch the previously made Fpdtr in the new stitch.

MITTEN
(Make 2)

Right Hand

Cuff

Using 5mm [US H-8] hook, ch 4 (6).

Row 1 (Right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn—3 (5) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc; turn.

Rows 3-17 (3-21): Repeat Row 2.

Last Row: Ch 1; holding Right sides of Rows 1 and 17 (21) together and working through both thicknesses in back loops only, slip st in each sc around. Do not fasten off or turn.
Hand

Round 1 (Right side): Working across ends of rows, ch 1, work 18 (22) sc evenly around; join with slip st in first st and turn—18 (22) sc.
Round 2: Using 5.5 mm [US I-9] hook, ch 1, sc in same st as join, dc in next st, *sc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc and turn—9 (11) sc and 9 (11) dc.

Round 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each st around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-2 and turn—18 (22) dc.

Rounds 2–4 (2–6): Ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each st around; join with slip st in first sc and turn.

Round 5 (7): Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next st, sc2tog, sc in next 1 (3) st(s), sc2tog, sc in last 1 (2) st(s); join with slip st in first sc and turn—6 (9) sts.

Additional Rounds: Repeat Round 2 until Thumb measures the desired length to cover the wearer’s thumb. Fasten off, leaving an 8” (20.5 cm) tail for sewing. Weave tail through front loops only of stitches, pull gently to close tightly, and secure. Weave in ends.
