MAKING A RAFFIA TASSEL

I’m not exactly a tassel pro here, but if you have ever made tassels out of yarn or embroidery thread it’s pretty much the same. The main difference is that raffia can vary in thickness, and therefore it is stiff and seems to have a mind of its own.

First wrap raffia around a scrap piece of cardboard about five inches wide. Tie the raffia in the center. I’m using three strands of hemp string that are about 24 inches long.

Next wrap another hemp string around the raffia about an inch or so from the top and then tie off in a knot.

Thread the hemp string through the two wooden beads and tie a knot to secure the beads in place.

Tie the hemp strings together and trim as needed.

Cut the loops of raffia, then even out all the strands with scissors as needed and fluff to make the tassel look fuller.
